Suberb, Grande Antique French Oak Hunt Buffet de Chasse Cabinet, Circa 1860

  

A large and well carved case piece such as the example seen here was constructed in the middle half of the 19th century. The style became popular as the French middle class rose in wealth and power. People desired a way to display their new status, and a piece such as this would have made a powerful statement. This one is of no exception and would be well suited to a large room where it can take pride of place, be it hallway, living room, dining room or kitchen.

Alternatively, they could be used separately, i. Glass top hung in a hall, living room or study and the buffet section in say a dining room, or similar. The glazed section simply sits on the buffet section so no holes or fixing points that would be noticeable if used as a separate piece - making it actually rather versatile. This particular antique hunt cabinet is both a feat of design and engineering. Elaborate barley twist columns on either side, complex mouldings and the intricately carved woodland fowl jutting out of the lower cabinet doors make quite an impression.

Botanical/bird carvings adorn the top of the cabinet with middle framing two glass doors opening to a case with three shelves, that are adjustable in height. The base has two fitted drawers over cupboard doors that open onto a single shelf. Come with the original key which locks the glazed and buffet section, the top two drawers do not lock.

Condition report: Overall in excellent condition, no nasty breaks or repairs noted, top bobbins are replacements. Front right hand foot is missing the turned half bun foot. Original key opens and locks the base doors and glazed doors. Clean and unstained top of the buffet.
